AEW Dynamite: 8/16/2023 Preview

Bridgestone Arena. Nashville, Tennessee. Nashville hot wings. That last thing has nothing to do with AEW Dynamite, but now I want some – and some milky-milk at the ready. My tum-tum is growling now. Anywhoo, there’s quite a bit going on tonight, some of which hasn’t even been announced probably – such as a Greensboro, North Carolina promo with Hangman Page which caused a bit of a stir this past weekend. With that aside, let’s get into what’s been announced!

Jeff Jarrett vs Jeff Hardy (Deathmatch)

Credit: AEW

I’m going to be real with y’all. I don’t know what the heck is going on with this one, other than the fact two Jeffs are fighting in a deathmatch in promotion for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game coming soon. I don’t think they even gave a reason for this in kayfabe. WB just needs that money, I suppose. Still, what? Also, this is taking place in Tennessee, not Texas! What is going on here?

Darby Allin & Nick Wayne vs Gates of Agony

Nick Wayne is now the Darby Allin to Darby Allin’s Sting it seems and their war with the Mogul Embassy continues as the smaller statured wrestlers take on the big boys in the Gates of Agony. Darby’s going to do something that will leave him with some boo-boos, Nick Wayne will impress us, Gates of Agony will be beefy, and Prince Nana will probably do something managerial.

The Bunny vs Dr Britt Baker, DMD (Winner Goes to All In in London)

Credit: AEW

The Bunny, fresh from injury, takes on the dentist for a chance to fight in Wembley Stadium in front of a bunch of people. I don’t think I could count them all, but I wish I could count Allie in. See what I did there? Real talk, it would be nice to see her get any momentum as Britt already has a lot, but I imagine she being the bigger star of the two will end up in the four-way against Hikaru Shida, Toni Storm, and Saraya. I’m hoping for a strong performance from The Bunny though, as wrestlers are wont to do when they return from injury.

The Gunns vs Young Bucks

The Jackson brothers are set to tee off against FTR in London, but first they have Bullet Club Gold members to contend with. Austin and Colten take on The Young Bucks, and I’m not even sure there’s anything being gained from this, but I’m sure it’ll be a hoot regardless.

MJF & Adam Cole Talk About the Main Event of All In

Credit: AEW

MJF and Adam Cole got on shaky ground on last week’s Dynamite as Roderick Strong’s jealousy and eventual defection to The Kingdom put the tag team at uneasy vibes. Perhaps they’ll be in better spirits, and perhaps The Kingdom and Strong will interject and now I’m realizing that this will probably lead to a tag team match between ROH’s stalwart heel tag team against AEW’s new odd couple – probably. I said probably a lot here.

Chris Jericho Gives His Answer to Don Callis

After acting re-Don-Callis, the bald man with Konosuke Takeshita has been awaiting Chris Jericho’s decision as to whether or not they will join forces. With the Jericho Appreciation Society noticing what Callis has done and what he will do to Jericho, they turned ship away from the shores of Le Champion. But will Chris turn him down in favor of the people who’ve had his back – or will he become a pawn in someone else’s game?

Kenny Omega Sitdown Interview With Jim Ross

Credit: AEW

No Dippin’ Dots. No Dave & Busters (dammit). Just two grown men having a conversation that will see Kenny Omega’s announcement for his future at All In. I want to speculate, but I’d rather have the moment just take me. Surprise me.

Orange Cassidy (c) vs Wheeler Yuta (AEW International Championship

Former (best) friends continue their bitter rivalry as Orange Cassidy takes on the Blackpool Combat Club’s young boy in what’s sure to be a scrappy battle. I expect Cassidy to take the W and retain, but what if they shocked us? Yuta Haters will be displeased, that’s for sure.

Holy cannoli – this was a lot of ground to cover, eh? So many matches and segments to fit in two hours. Maybe they’ll even let the women main event again, but I doubt it. Hopefully Baker vs Bunny is given a good time slot though. I still am confused by Jeff vs Jeff, however.

Catch AEW: Dynamite tonight at 8ᴘᴍ ET/ 7ᴘᴍ CT on TBS.
