Backstage News On Several Major Names Missing WrestleMania

This year’s WrestleMania featured only full time performers on the card, a far cry from previous years which had part time stars like Goldberg or Brock Lesnar on the card. It wasn’t for a lack of interest though, as Fightful Select has revealed news on four different stars missing this year’s big pay per view event.

The site reported on backstage news on Becky Lynch, Goldberg, Brock Lesnar, and John Cena missing WrestleMania. All four missed for different reasons, but it seems like only one of them had potential creative plans in place at one point.

Those that we spoke to said that WWE was “hopeful” they could have Becky Lynch make an appearance, but that’s obviously one that WWE and people associated are going to play close to the vest, and they didn’t expect her to be pressured to do so. Of course, that didn’t happen.

Goldberg was briefly discussed for a WrestleMania match earlier this year, and the program with Drew McIntyre was even mentioned for the show. However, he wasn’t figured into the plans creatively by February. He has another match this year on his contract.

By February we were also told that Brock Lesnar was not figured in creatively. By the time Daniel Bryan discussions were brought up for the Roman Reigns-Edge match, there hadn’t been much progress on that front, at least based on backstage chatter.

We also asked about John Cena. We were told anything involving John Cena would likely have been laid out and planned well ahead of time due to his filming schedule, but wrestlers that we spoke to said that they’d be surprised if he didn’t pop up in some capacity. He didn’t.

While many people were hoping for Becky Lynch, and she had even teased it, John Cena had been giving clear hints he wasn’t going to be at this year’s WrestleMania due to COVID-19 restrictions as he filmed his Peacemaker show for HBO Max, while Lesnar remained under contract. While we didn’t see them this year, the WWE may already be making plans to get them involved for next year.
