Paul Heyman Says Jey Uso’s Work As A Singles Star Is The Reason SmackDown’s Ratings Are Up

Smackdown ratings have been steadily rising over the last few weeks. Even before a post-Christmas crash, the show had managed to improve their ratings, even improving their FS1 rating from the previous time they had been featured on that network. Paul Heyman has a feeling he knows exactly why, and this time he’s not crediting Roman Reigns.

Since Roman Reigns’ return, one of the fastest rising stars on the blue brand is his cousin Jey Uso. Uso has effortlessly slotted into the singles ranks and become one of the brand’s top performers. Getting victories over Daniel Bryan, Kevin Owens, and AJ Styles is nothing to sneeze at, and Uso has had two top pay per view performances in singles matches against his cousin that left the crowd breathless. Heyman recognizes that meteoric evolution and credits the rise in Smackdown’s ratings on the evolution of Jey Uso. Speaking with BT Sport, Heyman says Jey has solidified himself as “Main Event Uso.”

“I don’t think it was fractured. I think these were the necessary growing pains for Jey Uso – part of the best tag team of the past 20 years – to become ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso. I mean, Jey Uso is a singles star now. When Jey Uso stepped up into the spotlight it was a very interesting moment, and he said that when he would go to an airport, you know, five a clock in the morning and all the autograph seekers were there, they’d say “Which one are you?” Now, everybody knows who he is. Now everybody knows ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso. SmackDown ratings are on the rise, and they’re on a spectacular rise. Why are they on a spectacular rise? Think about it… Who has been in the main event more since September than any other performer on SmackDown? Anybody? Anybody! Jey Uso. ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso. ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso has out-performed Daniel Bryan. ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso has out-performed Big E. ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso has out-performed every single Superstar on SmackDown. How? Because he’s ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso and he had to go through those trials and tribulations in public, in front of everybody, for the audience to see him grow. From a magnificent, spectacular tag team wrestler, to ‘Main Event’ Jey Uso. I’m so proud of him.”

Uso has certainly proved himself in terms of being able to hang with the best talent in the company, and it’s no secret just how good Uso is. It should be interesting to see how they continue to book Uso going forward, especially with brother Jimmy nearing clearance to return.
