Catrina: One of Wrestling’s Most Fascinating Characters

Lucha Underground was like no other promotion. The cinematic aspects of this promotions were unparalleled on its heyday and even to this day we haven’t seen anything close to what Lucha Underground was producing.

Lucha Underground also served as the launching pad for many stars like Rey Fénix, Pentagon Jr., Prince Puma (Ricochet), Angelico, Matanza Cueto (Jeff Cobb), King Cuerno ( Hijo del Fantasma; Santos Escobar), Brian Cage, The Black Lotus Triad ( Io Shirai, Mayu Iwatani & Kairi Sane), Kobra Moon( Thunder Rosa) and many more. But of all those names, one of the most interesting names and who was part of the success of Lucha Underground was Catrina.

Managers have always been an important part of pro-wrestling’s history, but in the last few decades their importance had been going down and promotions preferred for wrestlers to speak for themselves. The appearance of Catrina was a revelation and showed the wrestling world that managers needed to come back. Her nonparallel charisma and chemistry with Mil Muertes were one of the most important pillars of the success of Lucha Underground.

Besides the cinematic stuff and the awesome matches, one of Lucha Underground appeals was to discover the plans from Catrina and Mil Muertes in their attempt to take control of “The Temple” from Dario Cueto.

Mil Muertes and Catrina were an awesome act together. Generally, I’ve never been a fan of supernatural gimmicks in pro-wrestling, not even Undertaker sold it to me. Catrina in the other hand did. Her Character had motivations and had plans since day one. She was not a spooky character for the sake of it, she was the mastermind behind it all. The mysteries behind the characters of Catrina and Mil Muertes were one of Lucha Undergrounds best hooks to return the following week to watch the show.

With Lucha Underground not coming back, it’s a real shame will never get to see more of Catrina and her pairing with Mil Muertes. But one thing is for sure, never say never in the world of pro-wrestling. While we may think she is dead, she could actually be planning her next big masterplan.
