NXT TakeOver 31 Match Card & Preview

Tonight is the night! NXT TakeOver 31 is coming at us live from Orlando, Florida at the WWE Performance Center. Here is the final match card:

Finn Balor vs. Kyle O’Reilly for the NXT Championship.

Is tonight Kyle O’Reilly’s time to shine? Or will Finn Balor continue his second NXT Championship reign? KOR has emerged seemingly out of the blue as a surprise babyface who just so happens to be one of the best wrestlers in the world to boot. However, standing in his way is another of the best in the world, and a man who it makes sense to keep the title on until Karrion Kross returns. Either way, except a five star match to close the night out.

Io Shirai vs. Candice LeRae for the NXT Women’s Championship.

Candice LeRae recently won the women’s battle royal to earn a shot at her former friend turned bitter enemy Io Shirai and her NXT Women’s Championship. LeRae is hands down one of the best wrestlers in the world, but similarly to Finn vs KOR, so is the current champion Shirai. With the main roster crying out for new women to freshen to the divisions, could the loser of this match be set for a call-up?

Damian Priest vs. Johnny Gargano for the NXT North American Championship.

Johnny TakeOver is once again on the hunt for the North American Championship, but this time he has quite the formidable opponent in his way. Priest has been promising big things for some time now and is finally getting the chance to show how good of a big guy he can be. Priest can be a little clumsy at times, but his recent work has shown much improvement, and working with someone as talented as Gargano can only lead to another instant classic.

Santos Escobar vs. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott for the NXT Cruiserweight Championship.

How refreshing is it to see a faction of Luchadors who don’t have to hide behind masks? El Legado Del Fantasma have been a breath of fresh air in NXT and on 205 Live but Escobar faces stiff competition in the super talented Isaiah Swerve Scott. Can Scott pull off the upset and Swerve out of TakeOver as the new Cruiserweight Champion?

Kushida vs. Velveteen Dream.

The new Kushida has been revelation, reminding some people that he even exists in NXT. The Timesplitter arrived in NXT to much fanfare, but following his loss to NXT UK Champion WALTER, he seemed to fade away out of memory and his only action of relevancy was coming to the aid of Breezango. Velveteen Dream… the less said the better. Phenomenally talented as he may be, recent events and fan reaction may prevent him from ever achieving what he is more capable of…
