The inaugural AEW Continental Challenge Cup will conclude with a championship match more than 20 years in the making.
Continental champion Jon Moxley will defend his title against Nigel McGuinness in the tournament final at All In: London on Sunday. The winner will leave Wembley Stadium with both the championship and the first Continental Challenge Cup.
Moxley advanced by defeating fellow Death Riders member Claudio Castagnoli in Wednesday’s opening semifinal on Dynamite. Their faction allegiance did little to soften the physical encounter. Castagnoli survived several of Moxley’s biggest attacks during the closing stretch, but the champion eventually trapped him in the bulldog choke. The referee stopped the match after Castagnoli became unresponsive, sending Moxley to Wembley.
McGuinness earned the other place in the final by submitting Kyle O’Reilly later in the show. O’Reilly entered the match with an obvious target after McGuinness injured his ankle earlier in the tournament. Although the submission specialist repeatedly attacked the compromised leg, McGuinness prevented the injury from defining the entire contest.
McGuinness eventually secured the London Dungeon and forced O’Reilly to submit. O’Reilly also developed significant swelling beneath his right eye during the physical semifinal. The victory continued an unlikely tournament run for McGuinness. The former ROH World champion defeated Katsuyori Shibata in the opening round before overcoming CMLL World Heavyweight champion Hechicero and O’Reilly while dealing with the ankle injury.
Moxley’s path included victories over Jack Perry, Jay White and Castagnoli.
Sunday’s final will bring Moxley and McGuinness together for their first documented singles match since March 2006. Available records list two previous one-on-one encounters between them in Heartland Wrestling Association, beginning in April 2005. Their last meeting occurred while Moxley was still in the formative stages of his career and McGuinness was establishing himself as one of the leading wrestlers in Ring of Honor. Moxley won their March 7, 2006 encounter.
Both men have traveled considerably different paths since then. Moxley became a world champion in WWE and AEW, while McGuinness built his legacy in ROH before an extended retirement forced him into broadcasting.
McGuinness returned to the ring after nearly 13 years during the Casino Gauntlet at All In 2024. Sunday will mark his second match at Wembley Stadium and his first singles championship opportunity at the venue. This time, the English veteran will have a home-country crowd behind him—and an opportunity to complete his comeback by defeating one of AEW’s most decorated wrestlers.
