AEW Dynamite: 8/2/2023 Preview

At the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida, AEW Dynamite celebrates its 200th episode. What a run, eh? Years of the product going strong, through trials and tribulations, to come out a viable competitor to WWE, or at least very close to it depending on who you talk to. Tonight, stories continue and originals to the company put on a show that reminds us why we loved this alternative to begin with.

Let’s look at this card then, shall we? Light the fuse.

Jon Moxley vs Trent Beretta vs Penta El Zero Miedo (Anything Goes Match)

The sky is the limit for these Day One wrestlers. Blackpool Combat Club, Best Friends, and Death Triangle representation that comes from the war that has since blossomed at ROH: Death Before Dishonor that celebrates five years of commitment and loyalty to a place that has gave these men a platform.

Toni Storm (c) vs Hikaru Shida (AEW Women’s World Championship)

The Outcast’s residential champion takes on another original in Shida, and this one is guaranteed to be nice and stiff. If you loved Jamie Hayter vs Emi Sakura, vs Shida, vs Storm, you will appreciate this one and as you watch this in the designated time slot, you’ll wish you could have more matches and stories like this with the women’s division.

Aussie Open (c) vs El Hijo Del Vikingo & Komander (ROH World Tag Team Championship)

Fresh off of his injury, Mark Davis join Kyle Fletcher as they defend ROH gold against lucha stars Vikingo and Komander. With Vikingo as AAA’s Mega Champion, perhaps they can stand a chance. This has been the first ROH title defense taking place on AEW for quite some time, so this is interesting. Perhaps Tony is leveraging for more ROH content on a wider spread scale?

FTW Champion Jack Perry Face-To-Face with Jerry Lynn

When ECW and ROH legend Jerry Lynn marched to the ring in defense of FTW and ECW last week, it seemed that he was destined to step out of retirement to shut this pillar up. Instead, it seems Lynn is aiming for a talent still relatively active. With All In around the corner, this has to be big. It has to be something that could steal the whole f’ing show. Hashtag eyeballs emoji.

Chris Jericho & Konosuke Takeshita vs Sammy Guevara & Daniel Garcia

Credit: AEW

Aligning and becoming buddy-buddy with Don Callis, Jericho enjoys the company of Japanese sensation Takeshita and talented Canadian artist Mel Coleman as part of the Don’s family. But Chris does this at the cost of his own Appreciation Society. The youth of his group, Guevara and Garcia are doubtless angry about this turn of events. Against their mentor, they’ll wrestle in a way that proves them proud and powerful without the Winnipeg legend.

The Elite vs Jeff Jarrett, Jay Lethal, & Satnam Singh

What better way to celebrate 200 shows of Dynamite than to have the trio that helped start this company than Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks? Well, you have the legendary Jeff Jarrett, the only challenger worthy of stepping against Omega. This team of TNA originals and a former basketball player against AEW originals who have changed the industry multiple times over will assuredly be a fun time.

We Hear from MJF

The World Champ has taken a bite of humble pie as he ate the pin against former friends FTR on last week’s AEW Collision and has embraced his platonic love of Adam Cole. He also promised that Cole will get a title shot due to their blossoming friendship. I’d wager that’s the route we take, unless Tony Khan tells me to go fuck myself and surprises everyone.

I’m excited for this card and I expect nostalgia to be on full display. It’s going to be a thrill ride that reminds us why we loved this company and gave it a chance to begin with. Let’s enjoy it amid the chaos of the wrestling world and the world in general.
