Khamzat Chimaev misses weight by 7.5lbs for main event bout vs. Nate Diaz tomorrow night

Khamzat Chimaev has missed weight for the UFC 279 main event.

The top-ranked contender came in 7.5 pounds over the welterweight limit at Friday’s official weigh-ins, tipping the scales at 178.5 pounds.

Chimaev’s opponent Nate Diaz successfully made weight at 171 pounds (with one-pound allowance).

It is not yet known if the bout will proceed as scheduled and if so, what amount of Chimaev’s purse will be forfeited as penalty.

Chimaev has competed at welterweight and middleweight in the UFC.

This is the first time that Chimaev has missed weight since joining the promotion in 2020.

Following him missing weight, Chimaev looked at reporters and said the following: “That’s not bad” before smirking, laughing and flipping off the cameras as he left to the back.

An undisclosed medical issue is the reasoning for Chimaev missing his weight, per the team of Chimaev.

Chimaev will be given an additional hour to make weight for his currently still in-jeopardy main event vs. Diaz tomorrow night at UFC 279.

Cole Shelton reportedly talked to someone in Diaz’s camp who said that the “Khamzat fight’s not going to happen.”

They believe Chimaev didn’t even try to make the weight and is cheating.

The consensus around Diaz’s team is he’s either going to fight Tony Ferguson or not fight at all.

Per an update from the UFC, Chimaev will no longer be cutting any more weight and the commission will be making an update on the situation very soon.

A source from team Diaz has informed Cole Shelton that the Chimaev fight is officially off. No word yet on an official replacement for Diaz yet.
