Could The FTW Title Be Used As A Super Heavyweight Title?

AEW have spoken about piloting ideas for the FTW title which is currently held by Team Taz member, Brian Cage. Within next to no time of hearing this, lots of fans began speculating about what could be done with the belt and the concept of a super heavyweight division has been thrown around. Bringing a weight class-specific belt into AEW merits quite an interesting discussion, would they be able to do it without hindering the wrestlers who would be involved?

From what they have available to them, if they were ever to do a weight specific belt it would be for super heavyweights rather than something for the cruiserweights. A cruiserweight belt would be worn by the likes of Darby Allin, Jungle Boy, Rey Fenix etc and would look good but would it not also feel like they were being compensated because of their size? This would quickly become an issue with talent and fans alike, as a large chunk of the AEW roster would fit into this category. This would surely undermine a lot of the talent’s chances of becoming a TNT or world champion.

However, when discussing a super heavyweight belt, there is only a select few who would qualify to challenge for the belt. This makes it feel a little prestigious right away but it would also succeed because of one simple thing, people love to see a good hoss fight!

Listed below are the main names who could be classed as super heavyweights and create the division right away:

  • Brian Cage (current champion)
  • Luchasaurus
  • Wardlow
  • Jake Hager
  • Will Hobbs (challenging for the title this Wednesday)
  • Lance Archer
  • Mr.Brodie Lee
  • The Butcher

A super heavyweight title would always feel important due to the match ups it would create, pretty much guaranteeing a spectacle with every title match. It would never headline a card with the world title being defended on it but it would still be a credible main event on PPV, TV or YouTube. It would be held in high regard with the fans whilst providing a big opportunity for AEW’s big men to stand out even more with the added legitimacy.
