UFC Vegas 10: History Is Made, The Women Shine

On Saturday night the UFC recovered from their original bout of Glover Teixeira and Thiago Santos being cancelled due to COVID-19 by allowing the women to showcase their talents as the replacement Main Event.

It was history in the making as Angela Hill became the first Black American female fighter to Main Event a UFC Card, Hill and Michelle Waterson didn’t disappoint. Landing a combined 259 significant strikes which saw Hill outland Waterson 131-128.

In the end, Michelle Waterson received the split decision victory over Hill (48-47, 46-49, 48-47) which seemed to upset Hill. Opinion was all over the place as many felt the fight could have been scored a draw or a win for Hill just as easily. For Angela Hill, this is the second straight competitive fight in which she felt like she did more than enough to earn the victory. For Michelle Waterson, this could put her back in title contention. Unfortunately, she hasn’t failed well against title holders as her last 4 loses have all come to former champions.

The Co-Main Event saw Ottman “Bulldozer” Azaitar continued his rise to star status. Living up to his nickname it only took him 93 seconds to dispose of opponent Khama Worthy. While worthy falls to 16-7 overall (2-1 In UFC) and ends a 7 fight win steak while Azaitar improves to 13-0 (2-0 In UFC). After a minute of feeling each other out a hard combination from Ottman wobbled Worthy and from that moment it was just a matter of time. Ottman continued his barrage and forced Ref Herb Dean to step in and call a stop to the fight.

12 out of 13 fights for Azaitar have ended in stoppage (9 by KO, 3 by submission) and he plans to have a quick turnaround to try and get on one of the 5 upcoming Fight Island cards. In a stacked Lightweight division it will be interesting to see where he will fall in 2021 if he continues this kind of run.

In another woman’s matchup, JourneyWoman Roxanne Modafferi earning an unanimous decision against Andrea Lee (29-28 x3). The 17 year veteran used her grappling skills to earn a very contested fight, This was her second victory of Lee. Roxanne Modafferi improves to 25-18 while Andrea Lee falls to 11-5

Light Heavyweight matchup between Ed Herman and Mike Rodriguez brought some controversy to the card referee Chris Tognoni misidentified a clean body shot Rodriguez landed on Herman as a Low Blow, allowing Herman time to recover from what could have very well ended in a TKO victory for Mike Rodriguez. It proved to be the turning point as in the third round Herman locked in a kimura for the submission victory at 2:41. Herman improves to 26-14-1 while Rodriguez falls to 11-5-1

The main card was rounded out with Bobby Green defeating Alan Patrick by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) and Billy Quarantillo defeated Kyle Nelson by TKO, 0:07 of the 3rd round.
