Jeff Hardy and his brother Matt Hardy signed WWE contracts to make a return to the company at the same time. Those contracts were the same length, but Jeff’s contract was frozen while he was injured and taking time off for other reasons.
Matt Hardy let his contract expire. He is now with AEW and experiencing a renewed run. His brother Jeff is still in WWE, and he is currently IC Champion after getting through a very personal angle that focused on his history of substance abuse.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE decided to tack on an additional 20 months to Jeff Hardy’s deal. This won’t see Jeff Hardy’s contract expiring for quite some time. Jeff had shoulder and knee surgery amongst other issues and WWE decided that he owed them those 20 months.
We’ll have to see what Jeff Hardy decides to do in this situation. He could elect to re-sign with WWE. They typically pushed him as a singles star far beyond any push his brother received. This could be a very interesting situation when the time comes to talk about a new deal for the Charismatic Enigma.
It’s fair to assume that if Hardy’s personal reasons has been playing out on screen the company is confident enough in his road to recovery. The lines between real life and “Kayfabe” have long been dwindling away since the social media boom, leaving fans at times to have a harder time see the issues of their favorite superstars play out on TV. Given Jeff’s exciting style in the ring it’s also not entirely impossible that he will end up on the shelf again at some point, almost making it impossible to ever leave.
It’s also interesting to note that at the time of this article, Matt Hardy is scheduled to wrestle with his career on the line at AEW All Out. If Jeff’s brother is ready to finally step away from the ring it might give him more incentive to stay where he’s at in a singles competition rather than waiting to jump ship for a Hardy Boyz run in AEW.
