AEW Dynamite: 8/23/2023 Preview

Duluth, Georgia’s Gas South Arena houses tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite with this Fyter Fest special leading us to All In and what a whopper of a card! So many segments and matches announced, so let’s dig in.

Jack Perry retires the FTW Championship

After defeating RVD a couple of weeks ago, Jack Perry sees little need in the existence of the title he won off of HOOK. This raises a big side-eye to his legitimacy. Yeah, get rid of your first singles championship and a piece of wrestling history. Big brain time. Bam. Gottem.

Aussie Open (c) vs The Hardys (ROH Tag Team Championships)

Remember when Tony Khan had the ROH titles defended on AEW programming and would spotlight its roster, possibly hoping that in doing so he could get the legendary indie product a TV slot? Pepperidge Farm remem- no, that bit is tired. Anyways, Australia’s champions continue their huge year as they take on the tag team legends of Matt and Jeff Hardy. Two different dynamics and styles in one match.

FTR & Young Bucks face-to-face interview

Despite the awkwardness surrounding Cash Wheeler, I am looking forward to this verbal encounter. FTR’s face-to-face segment with The Briscoes during last year’s ROH Death Before Dishonor was compelling and intense, as was when The Young Bucks did so with Kenny Omega and Adam Page ahead of 2020’s Revolution. Both segments led to highly beloved matches. I’m getting goosebumps now.

Swerve Strickland & AR Fox vs Darby Allin & Nick Wayne

AR Fox has found himself with his new role as a heel alongside Swerve Strickland, and there is history among the four competitors. Nick Wayne has had matches with Allin and Strickland, and Fox has complicated histories with those two as well. More exposure with Wayne will help his stock rise undoubtedly, but I hope he doesn’t stay pigeonholed and overlooked with this. I want to see this kid grow and work with whoever he can. Also, still cool we’re getting to see Swerve Strickland face off against Sting in a huge stadium. Pop.

Chris Jericho vs Will Ospreay Contract Signing (for All In)

Don Callis, having turned on Jericho and costing him his Appreciation Society, has the Aerial Assassin face off against Le Champion in a venue suited wholly for them in a verbal confrontation. They’ve never faced off in-ring before to my knowledge, but I imagine this will generate hype ahead of what will be a crazy huge match for both men. All parties involved are going to sell the heck out of this.

Skye Blue vs Ruby Soho

I’m a little iffy on this one. Blue has been chased by The Outcasts for quite a while since the group’s inception but with the track AEW has been on lately, maybe this will be cool. The young Skye has been on a roll this year, consistently putting out great performances while going viral (for whatever reason lol), and to have a seasoned competitor in Ruby, perhaps this could be a shining point in what has otherwise been a stinky storyline. If this is the main event, they better bring their A-game, because the women in weeks previous have been doing just that.

Renee Paquette speaks with Adam Cole

Credit: AEW

It’s still weird to call her Renee Paquette instead of Renee Young. Anywhoo, she’s going to talk with Adam Cole separate from MJF in what will be a gripping conversation. Adam Cole, having a rocky path and a scary derailment, gets such a huge chance to do something memorable and have a boyhood dream come true.

Jon Moxley vs Rey Fenix

Blackpool Combat Club vs Death Triangle. The high-flying acrobat in Fenix will have to dig deep in the depths of his humanity to overcome the snarling beast that is Moxley. This may be the match of the night, as these two are among the greatest in an elite roster.

Renee Paquette speaks with MJF

Much like the aforementioned Adam Cole segment, I imagine this interview will tug at the heartstrings. MJF, having possessed a cold and uncaring heart now feels it warm and pumping for the man who broke through that exterior. After a childhood of disappointing role models and authority figures, bullying, mental conditions, and antisemitism, MJF has found solace in another person, someone who seems to care for him. We’re going to cry, aren’t we?

The Elite vs Juice Robinson and The Gunns

The Young Bucks are doing double-duty tonight, as they face fresh faces from a hydra of their past – members of a split-off of The Bullet Club. Juice and The Gunns in particular have been an entertaining part of the faction, so to see them collide with The Elite is going to make for a heated match. Of course, there’s possibility of a Jay White interference or FTR presence. We’ll see.

Wowzers. That was a detailed card. A lot going on. But alas, we are days ahead of one of wrestling’s biggest shows in what’s to be a historic event. Let’s get nuts with it.
