Vince McMahon Reportedly Makes Mid-Match Change During SummerSlam Main Event

As we saw last night during the SummerSlam Main Event for the WWE Universal Title, Roman Reigns was able to finally pin Brock Lesnar and win the title, all while also managing to dodge a MITB contract cash in from Braun Strowman.

Many noted that the match was rather short for a Main Event, especially when the Universal Title is involved, and even more so for a PPV as big as SummerSlam. Many had speculated that the match was cut short and a bait and switch was done teasing a Braun cash in following the match, so that by the time the show was over the fans didn’t have a chance to boo Roman out of the building.

Well, it appears as though there may be some merit to those speculations and theories. The Universal Title Match Main Event from last night’s SummerSlam PPV was discussed on the latest episode of Barn Burner’s No Holds Barred podcast. Joseph Peisich reported on the show that Vince McMahon made a call mid-match to cut the match short in fear of the crowd turning and boo’ing Roman again.

Regarding the finish of the Universal Title Match at SummerSlam, Peisich said:

“I have heard that Vince McMahon change the script middle of the match. That wasn’t the supposed ending. He cut it off because he thought this is the way people were not totally really really 100 percent booing Roman Reigns, so he said cut it off now.”

“I was told the event itself was supposed to go until 11:28 [PM EST] and it finished off at 11:05 [PM EST]. They cut it off 20 minutes earlier than was expected.”

We want to point out that the change called mid-match had nothing to do with who was walking out of SummerSlam as the Universal Champion, only the length of the match itself. The plan reportedly has always been for Roman to leave SummerSlam with the Universal Title.
