AEW Collision: 8/12/23 Preview

What’s up, my fellow Colliders? Tonight’s Collision takes place within an arena of wrestling history: The Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. I don’t know what the ratings are and I don’t give a hoot to be quite Francis, because the card every week keeps me hooked, as does the stark contrast to sister program, Dynamite. On this August night, we’ve got a litany of action, so I’ll keep this opening paragraph brief. We’ve got graps to discuss. Let’s Collide, shall we?

We’ll Hear From Powerhouse Hobbs

For some reason, they don’t seem to have made a normal, horizontal graphic, so enjoy this one in portrait mode.

It’s no secret the ball has been dropped with Hobbs time after time – whether it’s him losing the TNT Championship or the Book of Hobbs gimmick relying on bringing an actual book to the ring. Yet fans want better for him. Maybe this will come from that – in fact, through QTV, I’m feeling this is all part of a story he’s telling. If so, I’d love to see what he has cooking.

Ricky Starks Addresses Last Week’s Actions

Ricky was in an absolutely foul mood after CM Punk pinned him for the win after Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat caught him being a cheaty-cheater, and tonight, he explains why he attacked ol’ Steamy with his own belt. A regular belt, not a championship belt, though I’d imagine that would hurt a lot worse. Steamboat should be thankful for that. Will Ricky come out with the truth or will his million dollar pants catch fire?

The Acclaimed Return to Action

Billy Gunn is retired, and it’s time to move on. The Acclaimed want to get momentum again, even without their father figure, even with questions of what Malakai Black said to him still swirling like maddening pools of uncertainty in their minds. Could this derail their drive to succeed, or will they thrive in spite of losing Daddy Ass?

Mercedes Martinez & Diamante vs Willow Nightingale & TBS Champion Kris Statlander

A non-title match and a continuing women’s storyline that doesn’t involve The Outcasts? Yes, please! Attention is actually being paid to the women’s division. If it weren’t for the insane trios match that will likely main event, it would be awesome to see this in its place. Still, that is not a criticism. I’m just thrilled we’re getting this at all. Many blessings upon the booker(s).

House of Black (c) vs CMFTR (AEW World Trios Championship)

This is bonkers. Nuts. Crazy, even. I didn’t think of seeing Malakai and his family against CM Punk and FTR. What’s more is this match is going to be just as wild. The classic Southern style of FTR, the veteran wiles of Punk, and the creepy macabre aura of The House of Black will undoubtedly lead to a clash of styles and presentation. Neither team can afford this loss, as the HoB are the trios champs, FTR are AEW Tag Team Champions, and CM Punk is MTV’s Real World Champion, which he spray-painted an “X” on to summon the X-Men. Therefore, I don’t think this will be a clean finish (if there is any), because Punk has an old foe in Samoa Joe awaiting a response for a match at All In. Either way, this is going to be a ride.

What a night to look forward to! Which part are you looking forward to tonight? I look forward to colliding with y’all come show time.

Catch AEW: Collision tonight at 8ᴘᴍ ET/ 7ᴘᴍ CT on TNT.
