AEW Collision: 8/5/23 Preview

The Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle Washington brings us tonight’s Collision card, with some big matches, both in concept and in stature of some of the in-ring talent. Drama, action, and big meaty men slapping meat – and two women who are being given something substantial. Let’s take a look.

FTR (c) vs Big Bill & Brian Cage

Credit: AEW

Lost among the MJF/Adam Cole hype was a tag team that won over fans during the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament. That’s right, Big Bill and Brian Cage are together again! I don’t know if Bill is still part of The Firm or hanging out with Lee Moriarty – and if not, I hope Lee finds something to do because he’s good at the wrestles. Cage, I think he’s still a part of Mogul Embassy, isn’t he? I don’t know, but this team with new chemistry goes against those who’ve had it for almost a decade. Should be fun.

Kris Statlander (c) vs Mercedes Martinez

Thank goodness there’s some substance to this. Stat’s had a few meaningless bouts aside from Taya Valkyrie, so to see her lock up in a story set up from last week is nice. Not only that, but Mercedes Martinez is given something to do! Wouldn’t it be nuts if this Collision show addresses everyone’s grievances with AEW’s women’s division (including mine)? People would have no choice but to appreciate the CM Punk show, should he not be like how most big western promotions. I’m getting too far ahead of myself here – but I’m looking forward to this. Tough ladies being tough.

We Hear From The Acclaimed

The Acclaimed will arrive, but what are their thoughts after Billy Gunn seemingly retired the other week? They’ve been awfully silent, so whether they move on or they try to get him back, we will have to see. We probably won’t even get a rap from Max Caster or Anthony Bowens screaming for someone to scissor him, which would be sad.

CM Punk (c) vs Ricky Starks (Real World Championship, Ricky Steamboat Special Outside Official)

So the factual best wrestler to have ever lived was personally selected by CM Punk to keep a watch on the match so nothing sneaky happens. If memory serves me correct, Steamboat was a stickler who would prevent Punk from using the ropes to aid in his pins when he refereed in Ring of Honor. Who has been winning by using the ropes to his advantage? Ricky Starks. You’re not slick, Punk. You’re not slick.

There ya have it, folks. Some big matches and a promo, plus some surprises I’m sure. I’m looking forward to it, especially Steamboat because I’m a filthy mark. This should satisfy some of the sickos who thrive on in-ring work, while keeping everyone talking as the show goes forward.
