Update: Rey Mysterio Legitimately Injured During Smackdown Match

In an update to the original story, it has since been confirmed that the injury is legitimate.

Fightful Select is reporting that:

“Rey Mysterio sustained a legitimate injury on Smackdown.

Fightful sources confirmed late Friday that Rey Mysterios spot on Smackdown was not storyline as originally suspected. We’ve learned that Santos Escobar was actually supposed to win the match clean, and an audible was called and the match was ended.

In addition, there was a backstage segment follow up that was planned that had to he nixed.

We wish him a speedy recovery.”

Rey Mysterio and Santos Escobar – both part of the Latino World Order faction – were wrestling for a chance at the WWE United States Title next week on Smackdown against current champ, Austin Theory.

It appears from the video above that the injury happened when Rey was on the outside of the ring and Santos did a suicide dive through the middle ropes to the outside, and his head collided with Rey’s, causing Rey to hit the mat hard and what Michael Cole described as “whiplash.”

Myself and the Bodyslam staff wish Rey a speedy recovery, and we’ll keep you updated as more information becomes available.
