Trinity: ‘I Felt So Broken Down Mentally That I Didn’t Want To Come Back To Wrestling’

Trinity Fatu defeated Deonna Purrazzo at Slammiversary to become the IMPACT Knockouts World Champion. Trinity now sits on top of what is arguably the best-utilized women’s division in the business.

Fresh off of the Slammiversary PPV, Trinity Fatu talked with Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso about her match with Deonna, how far she’s come, and the message it sends.

“I’ve never had a match like that,” says Trinity Fatu, who debuted for Impact in April. “Deonna is incredible in the ring. I had to step up to match her intensity and energy, and matching her style was a challenge, too. She is the hardest opponent I’ve had to face in my career, and I feel so honored to have shared the ring with her.”

Submitting a submission specialist was an integral part of the Trinity-Purrazzo story, adding even more significance to the finish.

“We put so much thought into every part of this match,” says Fatu. “I’m so happy we got it right. Deonna made me dig deep and fight through it. That’s my story. The struggle makes it real. It also makes it beautiful.”

“This is only the beginning,” says Fatu. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity Impact is giving me to prove myself. I’m changing the narrative and rewriting my own story.”

“This is so much bigger than pro wrestling,” says Fatu. “It’s about life and overcoming challenges. I chose to keep pushing forward. It feels really good to come out on the other side.”

“The support, it’s everything,” says Fatu. “That’s what made me continue. The negativity on social media got to me, and I felt so broken down mentally that I didn’t want to come back to wrestling, but the fans constantly brought me positivity. Their care gave me that confidence and belief in myself. That’s who I’m rocking with: them.”

Trinity debuted with IMPACT Wrestling in April at their Chicago TV tapings, and she first debuted on screen for their weekly 5/4 episode of IMPACT onAXSTV with a live microphone where she addressed the fans and live crowd for the first time in over a year. She put the whole Knockouts division over as some of the best ever, but also put them and the Knockouts World Champion – Deonna Purrazzo – on notice as well. Trinity made it crystal clear that her main objective is the Knockouts World Title.

Two weeks later on the 5/18 episode, Trinity took on and defeated KiLynn King for her in-ring debut with IMPACT. Trinity has been undefeated since that point, having also defeated Gisele Shaw & Savannah Evans, both in singles matches and as a team with Deonna Purrazzo.

Trinity got to the top of the mountain and at Slammiversary, joined a very prestigious group of women in the history of this company and women’s wrestling as a whole when she defeated Deonna Purrazzo at Slammiversary to become IMPACT Knockouts World Champion.

After winning the Knockouts World Title, Trinity topped the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Women’s ranking at #1.

Trinity has a match coming up this week where she will team with Subculture member Dani Luna, where they’ll be taking on The Coven in a tag team match.
