Dark Side Of The Ring Composer Names The Hardest Episodes To Score

Dark Side of the Ring season four premiered on May 30th and will air a new episode every week until
August 1st. Amongst other topics, the show has covered Magnum TA as well as Sunny.

While speaking to Dan Moore, Dark Side Of The Ring Composer Andrew Gordan Macpherson was asked what the hardest episodes of the show to compose. Andrew would unsurprisingly name the Chris Benoit episode as an emotional affair.

“Benoit and Grizzly Smith weighed on my heartstrings pretty heavy… which was good inspiration, but led to a pretty sad mood around the studio those weeks. Possibly some crying, but I won’t snitch. There’s
another episode, I won’t say which one, but it was at the end of batch of episodes where I’d written
ALOT of episodes in a short time and while I was writing it, I was starting to feel burnt out and thought it
might not be good enough, but it turned out to be one of Evan’s favourite scores. In fact, they use cues
from it as temp music in early edits on new episodes all the time… I think we can all be our own worst
critics sometimes.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Macpherson was asked how he keeps Dark Side of The Ring’s score fresh four seasons in.

“I try to think of a different genre that could be relevant for the sound of every
story and fold that into the signature sound of the series. Other than that, I buy new instruments and see what comes out.”

Dark Side of The Ring season 4 will continue to air on Vice TV until August 1st as originally noted.
