All Elite Wrestling has done great things for storytelling. Sometimes it takes weeks for something to simmer, but it seems like last night set the seeds for an upcoming feud that may just wind up getting a new star over for the company.
As reported earlier, AEW has signed Lee Johnson to a full time deal. The Nightmare Family member had his moment to shine on Dynamite last night, and even had a chance to cut a promo as he was offered his deal. While thanking everyone, a little tidbit in there indicated the direction they might be going with Johnson and how it could potentially get him over now that he’s officially All Elite. Dave Meltzer talked about it on Wrestling Observer Radio, and it seems like Johnson might be destined for a feud with his Nightmare Family trainer, QT Marshall. During Johnson’s interview, he thanked many people but managed to omit Marshall, the man who had been training him.
“QT handled it perfectly, like he didn’t over exaggerate, and you’re probably not going to notice it unless you’re looking for it and they play it back to tell the story. You’re going to see that QT starts a little bit confused at the beginning and at the end he’s a little upset because he’s the actual trainer and he’s not mentioned at all, but everyone else even Arn and Brandi are mentioned who aren’t even the trainer. Obviously we’re building toward a Lee Johnson and QT Marshall feud.”
Meltzer revealed Cody had been studying the Bruno Sammartino and Larry Zbyszko feud, meaning there’s a strong chance this Marshall/Johnson feud could be very much a student/teacher rivalry
Marshall has had a career renaissance in AEW, delivering strong performances and even a top notch match in a bunkhouse brawl where he and Dustin Rhodes battled The Butcher & The Blade recently. Johnson’s in-ring skills got him highly noticed so far, so we’ll have to see what this brings if that’s the road they’re heading down.
