AEW Signed A Talent Back In 2019, Only To Not Use Him; Contract Expired

2020 was a rough year for professional wrestling. The COVID-19 pandemic canceled major shows, changed plans all across wrestling, and in the case of one wrestler, may have cost him a chance at working for AEW.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported at some point during the fall of 2019, AEW had signed luchador Aramis, but wound up never using him. The story was confirmed by Luchablog, who provided more detail. Aramis had slowly started building a reputation outside of Mexico thanks to working PWG’s Battle of Los Angeles in 2019. The luchador had been best known for his appearances in AAA but is widely considered a freelancer in Mexico.

Luchablog added to the report by stating that in the fall of 2019, AEW signed Aramis to a deal that covered five appearances over several months. These were standard contracts before they moved to the tiered deals it seems for people who weren’t signed full time (Big Swole was reportedly under a similar deal until she got her full time contract).

Aramis was brought to the Indianapolis tapings on 11/19 and they even measured him for new gear, with the idea he would have a new name and new gimmick in January. January came and went without being used and his contract eventually wound up expiring in March of 2020 without him being used. He was, however, paid for the dates.

Luchablog speculates that Aramis was supposed to be part of The Dark Order initially, but the lukewarm reaction to their debut at the end of 2019 changed that, while the Observer believes they had difficulties securing a work visa for him at the time.

While that last bit is pure speculation, it’s also possible Aramis gets a second chance in 2021. AEW has started bringing TH2 back in regularly and El Australiano is also based out of Mexico, and he has been featured on AEW recently.
