Update On Jay White’s NJPW Status

Jay White is a hot topic in the wrestling world right now. The former IWGP World Champion teased he was done with New Japan following his loss at Wrestle Kingdom. A loss the following night at New Year’s Dash didn’t seem to quell those rumors either.

Now with WWE people backstage talking up White to officials, we’ve learned a little more about White’s potential move. On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about how Jay White had been approached by by AEW in the process of building the company, and he revealed some interesting news.

“Okay, the Jay White stuff. I have not spoken to Jay White and New Japan isn’t saying anything which makes me think it’s an angle, and it probably is.”

“When AEW was forming, so this would be late 2018, obviously they wanted Jay White. All of those guys worked with him. They know how good he is, I mean they knew without the push [from NJPW] how good Jay White’s potential was and how good he is. He’s better now.”

“He told [AEW] when they talked to them in 2018, he said that he signed a seven-year contract in 2018. He said, ‘I just signed a seven-year contract.’ I don’t know if that’s true, but I know that’s what he said. So, you can take it from there as far as all this stuff.”

If what White said to AEW was true, don’t hold your breath seeing Jay White anywhere other than New Japan for a while. If it isn’t, White may become one of the industry’s hottest free agents that just about any company in the world will be chasing.
