Potential Backstage Plans for Roman Reigns vs. Adam Pearce At The Royal Rumble

Last night on SmackDown, Adam Pearce won a gauntlet match to become the #1 Contender for the Universal Title. Despite having zero interest in competing, Pearce was attacked by Roman Reigns and Jey Uso, along with Shinsuke Nakamura, with Reigns throwing Pearce on top of Nakamura to force the win to happen.

So as it stands, Roman Reigns vs. Adam Pearce will happen at the Royal Rumble for the Universal Title. Or will it?

Dave Meltzer discussed the angle on Wrestling Observer Radio, and he believes that at some point on the road to the show, WWE will find a way to replace Pearce with Kevin Owens.

“It’s possible that they’ll change it back to Kevin Owens because it seems like a strange match to make; because if they do that it pretty much tells you that they literally have no ideas at all. I’m not ruling out that they’ll go back to Kevin Owens.”

WWE wrote Owens off of television this week with kayfabe injuries, stating he had suffered “a spinal contusion and bruised kidney” following a vicious attack from Jey Uso and Roman Reigns.

And while there are hopes Owens will eventually be the one facing Reigns at the Royal Rumble, Adam Pearce is no slouch himself. A former Ring of Honor star, Pearce is also a former 5-time NWA World Champion and widely considered a respected worker during his career.
