Keith Lee Talks About His Main Roster Call Up

Keith Lee may not have been successful last night in winning the WWE Title from Drew McIntyre, but that doesn’t change the fact he had an absolutely impressive 2020.

After ending 2019 with a bang, pinning Roman Reigns and winning the men’s Survivor Series elimination match for NXT, Lee started his 2020 with a face to face confrontation with Brock Lesnar at the Royal Rumble that had left the crowd cheering for more. Throughout the year, Lee captured the NXT North American Title and NXT Title before eventually making his way to the main roster. Through that, Lee also had a highly acclaimed match with Dominik Dijakovic at NXT TakeOver: Portland right before the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered much of pro wrestling. Lee had become the black and gold brand’s top babyface before his NXT Title loss to Karrion Kross and call up, but it has led to him being featured prominently on WWE’s flagship show.

Bleacher Report talked to Keith Lee about his year and how he handled his main roster call up, feeling like he was thrown into the deep end of the pool and forced to sink or swim.

“I think the nature of the beast that is this sport…It’s a whirlwind in general. It’s all hectic and a little chaotic. In NXT, I felt more of a controlled chaos and I think when I came up to Raw, it became chaos all out. There were adjustments to be made and also strategic moves to be made on my part to try and make the biggest impact as possible.”

“It just kind of threw me into the deep end of the water right away, which is kind of what I like. Somehow I’ve managed to swim, and the idea is to keep swimming until I’m standing on top of the water. At this point, the opportunity is in front of me to make it happen. It’s chaotic, it’s a whirlwind, but it’s kind of what I thrive in. I have no problem with that.”

While there has been a lot of concerns for Lee on the main roster, especially after a rumored send back to the Performance Center to brush up on his skills with other big men on the roster, Lee has continued to shine and seems positioned to be a top star on Raw for years to come.
