Backstage News On Pat McAfee Being Pulled From NXT Television

Since the early summer, Pat McAfee has been a fixture on WWE NXT. The former Indianapolis Colts star has shined in his role as an on-air antagonist toward The Undisputed Era, and has delivered the goods on the microphone and in the ring to the surprise of many. WWE recently made the decision to pull him off of television for now, and it’s through no problem he caused.

Dave Meltzer talked about McAfee’s status and the situation with him on Wrestling Observer Radio, and while he has noted there’s no heat on him or animosity, there’s a sense NXT doesn’t want to rely too much on McAfee as their top heel when he’s not even a contracted performer.

“I don’t think they wanna rely on Pat McAfee to be all over the show — he’s really good — honest to god, I think he should be doing guest spots on RAW, I really do because it’ll — whatever, like I’m not saying he’s a big time celebrity, but he’s a real NFL player who will get, it nothing else, get them that sports publicity that everybody’s trying to get, and it’s very difficult to get, and he’s good. If he wasn’t good! If he wasn’t good, I’d say get rid of him, but he’s unusually good.”

He continued to add that “they just wanted him off for a little while” when it comes to him on television.

McAfee has done a wonderful job with the things asked of him so far on NXT. He’s certainly gained a lot of attention for his mic work, which even caught the attention of CM Punk for how good it was. McAfee is clearly a standout talent on the show, but they don’t want him to overshadow the talent that works for the company as they try to get them over as well.
