The world of professional football and pro wrestling have lost a talent today as former WCW star and former Pittsburgh Steeler Kevin Greene has passed away.
Mostly known for his tenure as a member of the Los Angeles Rams, the defensive end spent the last years of his career as a member of the Carolina Panthers, where his time there also had him show up for several stints in WCW as a popular babyface.
Greene’s most high profile storyline involved Steve “Mongo” McMichael, teaming with him but getting betrayed for McMichael to become a member of the Four Horsemen. Greene eventually returned to the company to get his revenge on Mongo with some accidental help from Jeff Jarrett. His tenure featured him in several high profile matches, including a 6-man tag where he teamed with Roddy Piper and Ric Flair to face the nWo and a tag team match where he and Goldberg also defeated the nWo.
Greene is third on the list of all time career sacks, where his career also featured stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the San Francisco 49ers. Greene was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016, and was a 5-time Pro Bowler and was a former Super Bowl Champion with the Steelers as a coach.
He was a 5th round pick in the 1985 NFL Draft out of Auburn, where he won the 1984 Zeke Smith Award for Defensive Player of the Year. He also was a participant in the ROTC at Auburn where he became a second lieutenant in the Alabama Army National Guard. Following his rookie year, he graduated an Armor Officer basic course at Fort Knox and eventually earned the rank of Captain. Green eventually completed airborne training at Fort Benning in Georgia to become a paratrooper.
