Government Inquiry Into British Wrestling Launched

An All-Party Parliamentary Inquiry into Professional Wrestling in Great Britain has been launched in the UK today.

The official Inquiry, chaired by Alex Davies-Jones MP and Mark Fletcher MP, aims to explore the current state of professional wrestling in Britain, the contribution that the industry makes to the UK economy and the impact that Covid-19 has had on its success.

Furthermore, the Inquiry hopes to identify if current laws and regulations covering the industry are effective, while also making recommendations to improve and support British wrestling.

The move follows a question being raised in the House of Commons by Davies-Jones (Labour, Pontypridd) last week about the #SpeakingOut movement and the allegations of sexism and abuse within the industry.

The Members of Parliament that make up the Inquiry group describe themselves as having an “affinity for wrestling,” and “wish to offer support to the industry”.

The Inquiry states that the reason for the investigation is that British professional wrestling has never received any high level support from Government, that wrestlers have often had little security regarding pay and expenses being covered by promoters, and that there are few common standards in safeguarding at wrestling schools and academies.

As part of the Inquiry, a call for papers – where interested parties are invited to submit in writing their thoughts, experiences and recommendations about the British wrestling industry – has been opened. Anyone with an interest in the subject can contact the Inquiry, whether they are fans, promoters, wrestlers, support staff or agents.

Evidence can be submitted via email to [email protected], and interested parties are encouraged to follow @appgwrestling on Twitter.
