As we saw at last months Summerslam PPV, Roman Reigns made his surprising return to WWE by attacking the newly crowned WWE Universal Champion, ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt, after Wyatt had beaten Braun Strowman in the main event.
Not only was this a shock to the WWE universe, but it was also, reportedly, a shock to the rest of the WWE roster. Vince McMahon kept Reigns return under wraps so it wouldn’t leak out online. The situation was similarly described as to how McMahon keeps Brock Lesnar’s surprise returns a secret.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE didn’t tell their advertising department that Reigns was returning either. Obviously, the match with Reigns, Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt was not promoted for Payback until after SummerSlam due to Reigns’ surprise return.
