Vince McMahon Threatening To Punish Talent Working With Third Parties

Vince McMahon has issued an edict this past week stating that talent are no longer allowed to “engage with outside third parties,” which would presumably include popular platforms such as Cameo and Twitch.

As reported by WrestlingInc.com, Vince McMahon held a call with WWE talent last Sunday regarding the reinvention of the current product. During the call, McMahon pulled no punches and said that WWE owns the real names of the talent not just their character names.

McMahon followed up the conference call by sending a letter out on Thursday. In the letter he wrote that it was imperative that all WWE staff promote and protect the brand in every conceivable way, and that talent have up to 30 days to stop engaging with the relevant third parties.

“Some of you are engaged with outside third parties using your name and likeness in ways that are detrimental to our company,”

“It is imperative that these activities be terminated within the next 30 days (by Friday October 2). Continued violations will result in fines, suspension, or termination at WWE’s discretion.”

McMahon went on to say that these changes are necessary as part of WWE’s major rebuilding process as they “enter the next phase of growth at WWE.”

It will be interesting to see if this new ruling holds up in any legal way. WWE wrestlers are classified as independent contractors, which has been heavily criticized in the past by shows like HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
