What Might Be Next For Cain Velasquez Following His WWE Release

WWE made huge cuts both backstage and talentwise back on April 15th.

It was reported earlier that one of the names that didn’t survive the mass WWE releases was former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez. Velasquez only worked one match in WWE, a loss to Brock Lesnar at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia.

Cain Velasquez’s wrestling future was discussed on the recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. While there are still options out there for Cain, it was pointed out that he probably won’t be working anywhere right now as most wrestling events have been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a return to MMA and the UFC looking unlikely, it was mentioned that there will probably be a lot of interest in Cain from AAA and even potentially AEW.

“I don’t know if he would go back to fight at this stage of the game. I could see him wrestling for AAA, perhaps with AEW, but it’s harder.”

“It’s funny because if he would have signed with AEW they probably would have used him a lot more because those guys were really impressed with his debut. In WWE, if you remember the match in Saudi Arabia he didn’t do anything in that match. That match was essentially one takedown, one submission and that’s it. They didn’t try to have him do anything. So, that’s the deal.”

“I could definitely see AAA using him. AAA wanted to use him after he signed with WWE. There were at least thoughts of him trying to work with WWE and bringing him in for [AAA] shows, obviously the odds of that happening were very, very slim, but I know AAA had ideas like that.”

Meltzer went on to add that he could see AAA bringing Cain back in for their huge TripleMania event, stating:

“I could see him working a TripleMania or something like that..”

We will keep you updated if we hear anything else about Cain Velasquez’s future.
