The Undertaker’s WrestleMania streak is considered by many one of the greatest accolades in the sport. The streak came to a end as we remember by the hands of Brock Lesnar, but apparently the streak almost came to an unscripted end earlier due to a botch.
Former WWE Referee Marty Elias was recently a guest on Chris Jericho’s “Talk is Jericho” podcast and he recalled the moment that almost ended The Undertaker’s streak early due to a botch during the match he officiated between Taker and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25.
“The original finish was the moonsault but when we were walking through the match, Shawn couldn’t hit the moonsault.”
“Shawn was going to the left, he was going under, he was going over. So he couldn’t hit it so we actually brought in some crash pads and everything and he was still going off to the side. So he goes ‘let’s do a plan B. If anything, if I don’t hit the moonsault I’m gonna land on my feet, Taker will kick me and pull me up, boom.’”
There was a spot during the match in which we saw the infamous dive that The Undertaker did over the top rope which resulted in him crashing and burning horribly as he pretty much landed on his head on the floor. Marty remembered being told by The Undertaker to “shoot count him out” if he couldn’t make it back into the ring after doing the spot.
“The only thing I was given instruction was by Taker and he said ‘if I don’t make it back in, you shoot count me out.’”
The Undertaker was able to make it back to the ring in time before Marty had to “shoot count him out,” however the spot was a close call for sure.
“[Taker] had a concussion. He fractured his pinky and his ring finger and he fractured his collarbone on that…Right here I’m selling and I’m selling more because I have no idea what’s going on because when Shawn threw me against the barricade, I didn’t see [the dive] and my earpiece broke so nobody was in my ear.”
