WWE Trademarks The Wrong Name For NXT Superstar

Well this is embarrassing for the WWE. WWE is known to either come up with new names for their wrestling stars, or trademark existing names for their own use in merchandising and promotion. There really is no rhyme or reason to who gets to keep their independent wrestling names and who gets newly made ones.

One superstar who got to keep their name was Japanese Joshi wrestler Io Shirai. Io has been known as one the greatest women’s wrestlers on the planet and has been featured in the NXT Women’s championship scene for much of her short WWE career. WWE attempted to trademark her name, but something got lost in the paperwork and they ended up trademarking “Lo Shirai” instead of “Io Shirai”

I don’t believe this has ever happened before in WWE and since it is unprecedented, we are unsure of how this will effect Io or WWE going forward. Hopefully it won’t end up with Io having her name changed to Lo, just so the trademark can fit better.
