Pat McAfee and Austin Theory wrestled at WrestleMania 38, and the match would eventually lead to a second match for McAfee as he would then face of against Vince McMahon.
Adam Cole and Pat McAfee share a history, their angle while Cole was in NXT drew the attention of many fans and Pat McAfee’s two performances within the NXT squared circle were well received, surprising for fans with McAfee’s skill in the ring for someone who had not wrestled previously. However, when they did face in one on one action, Cole would defeat McAfee.
In the lead up to this storyline, the two would nearly come to blows on Pat’s podcast among other situations where the pair would insult each other and even now, with Cole working in AEW and McAfee commentating for Smackdown, the two still trade insults occasionally.
When Cole debuted for AEW for example, Pat made sure to shout out the incredible pop he received while also still insulting Cole and now, Cole has fired right back when he was asked by Stephanie Chase about McAfee’s in ring performance at Wrestlemania 38:
“As a person, he’s a dirtbag, can’t stand him, but if I look objectively and talk about how much potential he has, Pat McAfee blows my mind. He is so athletically gifted. As far as the wrestling part, he’s done great. Everyone knows he can talk for hours and is super compelling and interesting. Pat knocked it out of the park, he did an amazing job. As far as potential of where he can go and what he can do in the pro wrestling industry, I think he can go as far as he wants to, seriously. To me, it was one of the highlights of the entire weekend, Pat’s match. He’s a terrible person, but a lot of potential.”
