Ortiz Reveals He’s Been Coaching and Producing In AEW, Expresses Desire To Stay With Company After Current Deal Ends

Though he hasn’t been in the spotlight lately, AEW’s Ortiz has been busy behind the scenes — helping shape the next generation of talent while carving out a new role for himself as a coach and producer.

AEW star Ortiz recently appeared on the Wombreezy Wrestling Podcast, where he revealed that he’s been taking on new responsibilities behind the scenes in All Elite Wrestling. The veteran performer shared that he has been working as both a coach and a producer, while also confirming that he has about a year remaining on his current AEW contract.

“As of right now, I have about a year left with the company. Give or take on this current contract,” Ortiz said.

He went on to discuss his growing role within the company, explaining that working as a coach and producer has given him a new perspective on wrestling and helped improve his own in-ring performance.

“I would love to stay there. I love working at AEW. I’ve been coaching and doing producing, which is learning a different skill and will give you longevity. It’s also making me be a better wrestler because I’m helping people call matches and I’m analyzing it from a different lens. I’m really enjoying that. It’s something I wanted to do anyway, and now I’m getting the opportunity to do it there.”

Ortiz also shared that he’d be happy to remain with AEW in any capacity, even if it meant focusing more on his backstage work.

“Even if I stay on purely to do coaching and producing, and I can still wrestle, I’m happy. If they keep me, I would stay.”

Ortiz, best known for his time as one half of Proud and Powerful alongside Santana, has been part of AEW since the company’s early days. The duo made a memorable debut at AEW All Out 2019, joining the Inner Circle alongside Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, and Jake Hager. Ortiz remained a consistent presence on AEW programming both as a singles competitor and in tag team action, although he has not wrestled a match for the company since January 2024.

His new behind-the-scenes contributions as a producer and coach signal AEW’s ongoing efforts to utilize veteran talent to mentor the next generation of wrestlers. With roughly a year left on his current contract, Ortiz made it clear that his goal is to continue growing with the company beyond his current deal.
