Mickie James Reveals How She Was Able To Use Her Real Name In WWE
Mickie James Reflects On Being Able To Use Her Real Name In WWE
During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, former WWE Women’s Champion Mickie James discussed the origins of her in-ring name and revealed how she was one of the last performers allowed to use her real name on WWE television.
James, who is a multi-time Women’s Champion and one of the most respected veterans in professional wrestling, recalled how the decision came about while she was still in developmental. Prior to debuting in WWE, James wrestled under the name Alexis Laree in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), WWE’s then-developmental territory.
“I was Alexis Laree in OVW. I just love the name Alexis and Laree is my legit middle name, so that’s how that name came about,” James explained. “But I’m about to debut this crazy stalker character, and Vince is like, ‘What’s her name? Alexis Laree? I don’t like that name. It sounds like a stripper name.’ And I’m like, Oh, guess it does, doesn’t it? Yeah, okay.”
She went on to share how the name change happened on the spot — and how her quick thinking helped her secure a rare opportunity.
“He’s like, ‘Well, got anything else? Got any other names?’ And I was like, ‘Uh, Mickie James?’ [He said] ‘I love it.’ I didn’t say, Oh, it’s my real name. I was like, oh, okay, great. So I was able, and probably one of the last few people, to actually be able to use their real name. I was able to use my real name. Crazy! And how grateful I am for that.”
Mickie James went on to make her official WWE debut in 2005 as part of a memorable storyline with Trish Stratus, which helped cement her as a major star. Over her career, James has held multiple Women’s Championships across WWE and Impact Wrestling, further solidifying her legacy as one of the most accomplished female performers in wrestling history.
