Update on Rumors of Chris Jericho Potentially Returning to WWE, and His Current AEW Status
Chris Jericho’s Future Sparks WWE Return Speculation Amid AEW Absence
Chris Jericho has been absent from All Elite Wrestling (AEW) programming since mid-April, when he stepped away from “The Learning Tree.” Since then, no concrete hints or teases have emerged signaling his return to AEW, leading to growing speculation about his future—and even whispers of a potential WWE return.
As reported by Sean Ross Sapp via Fightful Select, Jericho recently fueled the rumor mill after liking an Instagram post suggesting he should return to WWE. This sparked considerable buzz, especially following reports that such a return had been discussed at some level. However, according to Sapp, some within WWE were quick to “pump the brakes” on that speculation.
Despite the rumors, Jericho remains under contract with AEW through 2025, with several months still remaining on his current deal. Sources indicated to Sapp, that there have been no creative discussions involving Jericho within AEW recently, though it was noted that Jericho traditionally works directly with AEW President Tony Khan when it comes to his creative direction. His prolonged absence is uncommon, and there has been no clear indication of how AEW might handle his time away—whether through a potential contract freeze or other means.
It is also noted that Bryan Keith and Big Bill have been quietly removed from AEW’s roster page as members of “The Learning Tree,” further signaling a pause in that storyline.
WWE sources told Fightful that Jericho’s name has not been part of any recent creative talks within the company. While some talent have speculated on the possibility of his return, higher-ups stated that Jericho remains on good terms with WWE. One source described the situation as “far too early to tell,” suggesting WWE itself may not be entirely sure of his status in the coming months.
Chris Jericho, a cornerstone of AEW’s launch in 2019 and the company’s inaugural World Champion, continues to be one of professional wrestling’s most polarizing figures. Whether his next chapter will involve a return to WWE or a renewed focus in AEW remains to be seen.
