ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro Expresses Interest in Potentially Acquiring WWE’s Full Content Library
We could see more changes to where you view WWE content.
During a recent appearance on The Ringer’s Press Box podcast, ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro revealed that the network [ESPN] would be interested in acquiring the full WWE content library if and when those rights become available.
Pitaro spoke candidly about ESPN’s approach to premium sports and entertainment properties, noting that WWE’s extensive archive fits the caliber of content they look for. “Yeah, we’re always interested in content of that quality. I will tell you that we will have the archival rights for the events that we are airing, but yes, in terms of their library, we certainly would be interested if and when those rights are available,” Pitaro said.
ESPN recently strengthened its relationship with WWE through a broadcasting partnership that includes archival rights for events they will air as part of new deal that begins in 2026. However, Pitaro’s comments indicate that the network’s interest extends far beyond their present deal.
From a strategic standpoint, Pitaro also touched on the importance of retaining subscribers in the direct-to-consumer streaming space. “One of the things that we are focused on from a direct-to-consumer perspective is churn and minimizing churn,” he added. Access to WWE’s decades-spanning content library could be a valuable asset in achieving that goal, providing subscribers with a reason to stay engaged.
WWE’s library includes thousands of hours of classic matches, pay-per-view events, and original programming spanning multiple eras and promotions. With wrestling nostalgia stronger than ever and a global audience that continues to grow, the battle for those rights could become a high-stakes bidding war when they eventually hit the market.
For now, WWE’s vast archive remains with its current streaming home the Peacock App, but if Pitaro’s comments are any indication, ESPN will be ready to throw its hat in the ring when the opportunity arises.
