Move over Tribal Chief—Roman Reigns is about to become the Master of the Fist.
In a casting bombshell sure to excite both wrestling and gaming fans alike, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that WWE Superstar Joe Anoa’i—known to millions around the world as Roman Reigns—has been tapped to play Akuma in the upcoming Street Fighter live-action movie.
The news broke Thursday afternoon in a full cast announcement that featured an eclectic lineup of Hollywood names and rising stars, with THR stating:
“The call sheet ranges from A-lister Jason Momoa as Blanka to heartthrob Noah Centineo as Ken to gay country singer Orville Peck as Vega. Joe Anoa’i, aka WWE superstar Roman Reign[s], and martial artist-actor Andrew Koji (Warrior), are on the roll call as battler Akuma and lead character Ryu, respectively. Callina Liang (Presence) is playing Chun-Li.”
Reigns, a former Undisputed WWE Universal Champion and the face of the company’s post-pandemic era, has long been rumored to be eyeing Hollywood opportunities following a dominant run that began with his heel turn in 2020. While the former Shield member has dabbled in film before—most notably appearing in 2019’s Hobbs & Shaw alongside cousin Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson—this marks his most significant acting role to date.
For longtime fans of the Street Fighter franchise, Akuma is a major get. Known for his iconic red hair, and unrelenting fighting style, “The Raging Demon” Akuma represents one of the series’ most powerful and mysterious figures. He’s a warrior consumed by mastering the Satsui no Hado, making Reigns’ intense, brooding screen presence a perfect fit.
The Street Fighter franchise has seen numerous adaptations over the years, but none with a cast this eclectic—or with this much crossover potential. With Reigns stepping into Akuma’s sandals, the line between WWE dominance and Hollywood stardom continues to blur.
