A storm may be brewing on Friday nights, and it’s dressed in black.
PWInsider is reporting that there’s been a noticeable groundswell of support within WWE’s creative inner circle for Aleister Black, and it appears that he may be headed toward a major elevation of his status on the SmackDown brand.
According to the report, conversations have intensified backstage about boosting Black’s presence in the main event scene. Sources close to WWE creative — the same ones who correctly tipped Damian Priest’s eventual rise to upper-card status years ago — have now set their sights on Black as the next in line for that coveted bump up the card.
Those following Black’s trajectory since his return to the company this past May may have already seen the writing on the wall. The former NXT Champion hasn’t dropped a single match in singles competition since stepping back into WWE rings, and he’s been subtly woven into multiple storylines across the blue brand in recent weeks. His recent interactions with top-tier talent and high-profile segments haven’t been by accident — it’s part of a deliberate plan to integrate him deeper into the show’s central narrative fabric.
WWE brass is reportedly pleased not only with Black’s in-ring output, but also with his steadily growing merchandise numbers. That kind of double-threat value hasn’t gone unnoticed.
While nothing is ever set in stone in the ever-shifting landscape of WWE, all indications suggest that Aleister Black is a man being groomed for the spotlight once again. Whether that culminates in a marquee feud, a title opportunity, or something more abstract remains to be seen, but if the trend continues, expect to see Black’s name — and signature Black Mass — featured much more prominently in SmackDown’s top storylines moving forward.
