TKO Denies WWE Sale Rumors Amid Recent Layoffs and Restructuring
In the ever-churning rumor mill that surrounds the world of professional wrestling, one of the hotter topics this week has been speculation that TKO Group Holdings is allegedly exploring a potential sale of WWE. But according to a new report from Wrestling Observer Radio, those rumors have been quickly shot down.
Dave Meltzer, speaking on the latest edition of WOR, firmly addressed the buzz, citing internal denials and pointing to the recent business strategy of the post-merger company.
“The stories of him [Vince McMahon] somehow buying WWE, and I even saw a line in a story about how TKO is looking to sell WWE and it’s like, aside from that being denied all day, TKO has just saved between $100 million and $150 million by essentially removing so many jobs and things like that because they could operate UFC and WWE with the same office staff.”
TKO—the parent company of WWE and UFC following their highly-publicized merger under Endeavor—has made significant cost-cutting moves in recent months. While those moves have drawn criticism due to the sheer number of layoffs across both promotions, Meltzer’s reporting highlights that TKO sees these operational efficiencies as long-term investments, not short-term exit strategies.
The timing of the rumor mill firing up is curious. With WWE’s television rights deals largely locked in and new international markets opening up, speculation around McMahon’s role, recent backstage changes, and Endeavor’s aggressive cost-trimming have led some to jump to conclusions. But as it stands, there appears to be no legitimate fire behind this smoke.
It’s also worth noting that Vince McMahon is not currently in a position to re-purchase WWE. Any notion of him “buying it back” is pure fantasy, per the Observer.
For now, fans and insiders alike can put the “TKO selling WWE” talk on ice. The company remains focused on maximizing profits through synergy between two of the most lucrative combat sports brands on the planet—and not flipping one of them for a quick payday.
As always, Bodyslam.net will keep you updated if anything changes. But as of today, TKO isn’t selling WWE—regardless of what the rumor mill has to say.
