Gunther Doesn’t Think WWE Fans Had Seen A Match Like His Clash At The Castle Bout With Sheamus

Gunther looks back on his epic match with Sheamus back at WWE Clash At The Castle In 2022.

At the event, the two men put on one of the greatest matches in recent memory within WWE and perhaps the greatest Intercontinental Championship match of all time. The match was a brutal affair as the two men would batter each other with stiff strikes a plenty in the matchup. With the title being the only one Sheamus had failed to capture, the audience in Cardiff were strongly behind the Celtic Warrior.

In the end, Gunther was able to put Sheamus away and retain his championship.

In a new interview, Fightful asked Gunther about the match, noting that he felt like the matchup was a first time ever one for the company.

“The thing is, I guess to some degree, but everything happens so fast that it’s very hard to actually sit back sometimes and enjoy or reflect on what happened and stuff like that. Overall, it was great. I think Clash at the Castle was good for me because it was the first big pay-per-view match for me, or PLE as we say now. I could just showcase myself, showcase to the audience what I do. I think the style of match I put on is nothing they have really seen on that scale before. I think that’s why it stood out and why it was special, and Sheamus was a great opponent. He doesn’t stop, so you really gotta put a lot of effort into keeping the guy down.”

Over 400 days later, Gunther remains the Intercontinental Champion while Sheamus is still a staple of Friday Night SmackDown and will battle Edge next week on Friday Night SmackDown on the show Edge celebrates his 25th anniversary within WWE.
