Trevor Murdoch: NWA Is Attempting To Return To The Fundamentals By Drawing A Distinction Between Good Guys And Bad Guys

According to Trevor Murdoch, the NWA is making an effort to simplify its narrative techniques.

Since Billy Corgan bought the NWA in 2017, he has restored it to its former glory and put a premium on classic wrestling. A throwback to this style, Murdoch is a two-time NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion and has previously stated that he enjoys this aspect of the NWA.

The Undisputed Podcast’s Bobby Fish and Murdoch discussed how wrestling was different in the past since the shows offered more variety.

“Our wrestling shows used to have variety. You used to be able to watch a match that had storytelling, and then a little bit more of a high-spot match, and a tag team match. The whole show was a variety of different styles. If you didn’t like it, you could wait for the next match, and you’d see something different. Whereas nowadays, wrestlers, they don’t stand out. It’s hard to stand out in their own lane. They don’t,”

Murdoch continued by stating that since wrestling is based on the idea that there must be a distinct, unambiguous line separating the good guy from the bad guy. He observed that in traditional wrestling, this distinction was more apparent.

“That’s the whole basis of pro wrestling, good guy verse bad guy. Sometimes, those lines, you got bad guy against bad guy. There needs to be clear, definitive lines on who the good guy is and who the bad guy is. I think I back then, they made that very clear,”

Fish replied that the wrestlers’ jobs are made easier by the distinct division, but that this strategy occasionally fails since so much of the industry has “splintered.” Murdoch continued by saying that by conveying the straightforward tale of a good guy versus an evil guy, NWA is attempting to return to its roots.

“That’s something that we’re trying to do in the NWA is go back to the basics of telling the simple story of good guy versus bad guy. This guy wants to beat the shit out of this guy, and this guy want to beat the shit out of this guy. It’s one of the reasons why I like being in NWA because it breaks it down to its basic form,
