Jeff Hardy’s 2009 WWE Championship Reign Was Supposed To Be Longer, Triple H’s Influence Resulted In Short Reign

At just over 40 days, the era of the Charismatic Enigma was a short lived one. Hardy would lose the championship at the Royal Rumble, where his brother Matt would crack him over the head with a steel chair. This lead to Edge defeating Hardy for the championship.

While speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy talked about costing his brother the WWE Championship at the 2009 Royal Rumble. He would mention that the reign was supposed to be longer and that Triple H’s influence was the reason for such a short run with the title for Hardy.

“People were loving him. Some were pitching to delay the turn to WrestleMania [25].””Vince [McMahon] was open to it … but there were some people who probably were worried about Jeff having too long of a run. I get where Hunter was coming from … especially with some of the stuff Jeff did.”

Of course, the pair would have their feud into WrestleMania 25, with Matt defeating his younger brother in an Extreme Rules match at the event.

Jeff recently made his return to AEW TV, making the save for his brother as he was being the attacked by The Firm. We will have to wait and see what comes next for the Hardy’s now that they are reunited once again.
