Kenny Omega’s road in pro wrestling brought him to great heigths as part of the NJPW and AEW roster. He even had a few incredible matches in ROH, but his relationship with WWE wasn’t as successful. Although Omega did spend time in Deep South Wrestling, WWE’s developmental territory at the time, there is a good reason why he hasn’t returned.
While speaking to CBC Radio, Kenny Omega spoke about his relationship with WWE. He ended up in DSW, because WWE was the place to go, but it wasn’t his end game at all.
“We were raised as young individuals, as aspiring wrestlers, to believe that there’s one end game. There’s one place that you want to go. There’s one place that you need to go. You are a failure if you don’t go there. It was WWF. Yeah, at the time.”
“But I had found myself not enjoying the product, and I had found myself wanting to perform in a different way, in a different way than people were used to seeing it. And that’s when I sort of had my eyes opened to the other territories in the world.”
“I guess I just wanted to be my own master and commander. And what I wanted to do was I wanted to make my stories more relatable. I wanted to tell human stories.”Kenny Omega
Kenny Omega is still under AEW contract, but he might only be around because Tony Khan extended his deal due to time missed. Since Omega was injured for a majority of 2022, that could see Khan keep him around for even longer.
