Tony Khan Had Interest In Signing Jay White Prior To AEW’s Launch

As previously reported, Jay White is expected to leave NJPW very soon as his contract will be expiring soon. After his NJPW exit, it is highly likely he will be signing either with WWE or AEW.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer talked about Jay White’s NJPW status. While doing so, Meltzer also revealed that Tony Khan was interested in White back in 2018, which was before AEW existed.

“Fightful reported that Jay White’s contract is coming due and that both AEW and WWE are interested in him. White currently lives in Orlando. He has a loser leaves town match with Hikuleo set for the 2/11 show in Osaka.

“In 2018, when AEW was being formed, White was asked his contract status since he was a guy that there was interest in, since he was very good and people in AEW worked with him in New Japan and ROH.

“At the time White said he was under contract for seven more years. Obviously that time frame doesn’t add up if he’s available now. The story reported that WWE was the favorite to get him but it wasn’t a done deal, and technically neither side are as of yet unable to legally approach him.”

Triple H has brought in a few exciting names since he took over WWE creative, but several of those names were people his father-in-law fired. On the other hand, Tony Khan is no stranger to inking deals with free agents he wants on his roster. We will have to wait and see where the Switchblade turns up next.
