Ricky Steamboat Is Grateful To Chris Jericho For Carrying Him Through Backlash 2009 Singles Match

Ricky Steamboat, who had a storied career in the WWE spanning over three decades, retired from in-ring competition in 1994 but has remained active in the industry as a trainer and mentor to younger wrestlers. His final televised match against Jericho took place in 2008 at the WWE’s Night of Champions event.

While speaking to Bill Apter, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat expressed how grateful he was to face Chris Jericho in that career landmark match.

“You know, I had a really good showing nine or ten years ago, or maybe, no, that was 12 years ago, with Jericho. I had a good showing, and god bless him; he took care of me, too. That was the really last Steamboat (match) that, you know, that people saw. I felt at the time; I was about 70% of the young guy. I can carry my water, carry my weight. That’s the way I want it.”

We’ll have to see if Ricky Steamboat ever comes out of retirement. At this point, we know he would reject a Royal Rumble offer, because he said so himself. Only time will tell what’s next for him, or anyone else, in pro wrestling’s ever-changing landscape.
