The Peoples Main Event: Gunther vs. Sheamus

WWE Clash At The Castle is tomorrow on peacock from Cardiff, Wales and will air at 1pm EST. The show is headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Drew Mclntyre for the Undisputed WWE Championship. But, there’s another championship match that has many fans fired up and that’s Sheamus vs. Intercontinental Champion, Gunther.

The Peoples Main Event is a match that isn’t actually the main event, but most fans are looking forward to it the most and I think that’s a perfect description of Gunther vs. Sheamus. Two hard-hitting, gritty, ready to go superstars who’re looking to put it all on the line for the Intercontinental Championship. For years and years, the Intercontinental Title was looked at as a prestigious championship that was held by competitors who were looked at as the “work-horses.” It was truly the work-horse championship. You knew that when a intercontinental title match was on the bill, you were going to get a stellar match. Sadly, in more recent years, the championship has been thrown to the side, over looked and hasn’t even made it on a pay-per-view in over two years. But now, finally, the championship makes its way back to the big stage and there’s no better man to bring back prestige for the championship than Gunther.

Gunther was the longest reigning NXT UK champion, but when he made his way to the main roster, it didn’t take long for the Intercontinental title to land into his hands. Gunther was one of the fastest main roster debuts to champion in WWE history and for good reason. The big monster of a man has dominated everyone on his way to Smackdown and since being there, it’s been much of the same. But don’t let his size and stature fool you, he isn’t just a slow big man, we all know Gunther can work when he steps in that ring. A ring general, if you will. We’ve seen Gunther work well with various styles, but one of his best clashes is with Ilja Dragonov, a fellow brawler from the UK. They put on one of the best matches NXT has ever seen. But, Sheamus is a brawler of his own and maybe one of the best in WWE history.

I’ll go on record and say that Sheamus is one of the most underrated stars WWE has ever had. Despite his many accolades, still, fans don’t put Sheamus high on any ranking or favorites list, they don’t talk about him as a top superstar like they should. Sheamus has been WWE, World Heavyweight, Smackdown tag, Raw tag and United States champion. He’s won the Royal Rumble, Money In The Bank and King Of The Ring as well. Sheamus has done it all, except one thing and that’s win the intercontinental championship. If Sheamus wins, he will be the first superstar in the history of WWE to win every accolade WWE has to offer in which he calls the “Ultimate GrandSlam Champion.” Can he do it? Only time will tell.

At the 2009 TLC event, Sheamus won the WWE Championship and on the same night, Drew Mclntyre won the Intercontinental Championship. Now, the rolls are reversed and they’re in their neck of the woods. Drew challenges for the WWE title as Sheamus challenges for the Intercontinental title. Can they both get it done again on the same night thirteen years later? That’d be one hell of a story to be told for years to come. But again, Gunther is standing in Sheamus’ way and that’s no easy task. The excitement for this match is real. The feeling of the work-horse intercontinental title is back, the prestige is slowly coming back and these two absolute brick-houses are the two to put it all out on the line over the gold. There’s a reason that many other superstars, such as Drew himself, have been looking forward to this match the most, there’s a reason why on this jam-packed wrestling weekend, fans are foaming out of the mouth for this match the most. And a lot of that reason has been the build. Simple. Nothing too crazy and neither man touching. For two weeks in a row on Smackdown, both Sheamus and Gunther stared each other down without even touching for a second. Even with chaos around them, Sheamus and Gunther stayed eye to eye in one of the most intense stare downs we’ve seen in some time, these two are ready and so are we. Sheamus and Gunther are going to beat the hell out of eachother tomorrow night in Wales and the goosebumps are already forming. Lets F-king Go! The peoples main event is upon us.
