William Regal Was Pitched An American Gimmick In WWE

William Regal is British, if you didn’t know by his accent.

William Regal has had an interesting few months, he returned to pro wrestling following his WWE release at AEW Revolution where he formed The Blackpool Combat Club. Regal is one of the most well regarded teachers in pro wrestling, but before that he was an in ring talent for the WWE.

Speaking on his podcast the Gentlemen Villain, Regal discussed how a member of the creative team once tried to saddle him with an American gimmick.

“I remember once when one of the creative people in WWE said to me, ‘Can you do an American accent?’ It was his idea and only his idea. He didn’t last long there,” Regal said.

“His idea was to change the character of me to make me American. I was like, ‘That doesn’t make sense whatsoever.’ It was one of the few times that I actually said no to anything.”

Of course, this character didn’t ever come to pass and as Regal explains, he didn’t last long and for good reason. Can you imagine William Regal speaking in an American accent?
