The Butcher Explains The Origins Of His And The Blade’s Character

One of pro wrestling’s most unique tag teams is made up of the former Braxton Sutter and Andy Williams from the hardcore band Every Time I Die. Better known as The Butcher & The Blade, the duo debuted in AEW in November of 2019 and instantly made an impact.

No backstory was given on the duo along with their manager The Bunny, no character development has been given on them to date, the tag team has just been two hard hitting guys with an intimidating look, and that’s just the way Andy “The Butcher” Williams likes it.

Butcher was a guest on one of Miro’s streams, and the two began to talk about the formation of the tag team and the development of the characters. There’s a mystery to the duo, and according to Butcher, that’s the whole design.

“I came up with these two weird characters based on 90s movies specialty thugs. Not like the main heel, but the guy you have to beat to get to the heel. When the local guys can’t get it done, they have to call the weird guys from Milwaukee and they have to get it done. They have weird characteristics that are never explained, like a monocule and a weird mask. They’re just hitmen for hire. People ask me, ‘what is your character?’ I’m like, ‘watch any 90s action movie. A character like me will show up.’ That’s the whole thing. I just told it to Jesse [The Blade] because he’s such a 90s movie buff and was like, ‘let’s just be weird dudes that never get anything explained. We’ll call ourselves The Butcher and The Blade. You always refer to me as Butch and I’ll refer to you as Blade.’ That’s it.”

Butcher and Blade have long stood out for their look and the company continues to give them plenty of screen time to show off that look, including being featured prominently as Eddie Kingston’s allies on Dynamite lately. The duo will team with Kingston to meet Jon Moxley, Rey Fenix, and Lance Archer this Wednesday on Dynamite. You can watch the two AEW stars chat below.
