The ‘G.M.O.A.T’ (greatest masked superstar of all time) has signed a new contract to stay with WWE. According to a report by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Rey Mysterio has signed a new three-year deal.
Meltzer had previously reported that AEW tried to prize Rey away from the company, even matching the terms offered by WWE. However the legendary luchador made the decision to stay with with WWE
The fact his son Dominik is currently competing for WWE alongside him, is also said to have heavily influenced Mysterio’s decision. He would make the following comments in an interview with Wrestlezone in 2019, about preparing his son for a career in the wrestling business:
“One of the main reasons is to be able to prepare my son to eventually step in the ring one day,”. I want to have the opportunity to share the ring with him before I at least make an announcement to retire. I think that’s probably the last check on my bucket list, to be able to step in the ring with my son and be next to him when he’s feeling what I’m feeling for the last thirty years.”
To get Rey Mysterio to sign a new contract is certainly a big win for WWE. He is one of the most popular superstars in the entire company, he is still a fantastic wrestler, and his experience and knowledge will be invaluable in helping to guide the career of his son Dominik, and many other young talents on the roster.
