Over the last month or two it has been well documented that Rey Mysterio is working in WWE without a contract. New reports are now saying that All Elite Wrestling made a strong offer to try to obtain the services of the Lucha Libre legend.
According to a new report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, AEW put forward an offer which matched the “per match” deal which WWE had presented to Rey Mysterio. At the time of writing, Rey Mysterio has still yet to sign a contract with either organization.
Rey Mysterio competed in the main event of AEW All In, widely considered to be the precursor to AEW Dynamite, in August 2018. He teamed up with Bandido and Rey Fenix to face Kota Ibushi and The Young Bucks.
In a recent interview with ESPN, AEW EVP Cody Rhodes spoke of his admiration for his WrestleMania 27 opponent and said that Rey Mysterio “isn’t a one-company individual.”
“To me, the greatest luchador ever, of all time – hands down – is Rey Mysterio Jr. And he’s got friends here. Jericho and him are friends. Mysterio is not afraid to travel out there, either. He’s not a one-company individual. And I think Rey still has a lot left to give in terms of wrestling. That might be something that someone else is currently discussing with him at this point. You never know.”
In making his contract decision, Rey Mysterio is not just thinking about his own future. He is also factoring in the young career of his son Dominik, who will face Seth Rollins at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view event. Rey has said in the past that he won’t hang up the mask until he gets to form a successful tag team with his son.
In 2019, Mysterio told WrestleZone:
“One of the main reasons is to be able to prepare my son to eventually step in the ring one day, I want to have the opportunity to share the ring with him before I at least make an announcement to retire. I think that’s probably the last check on my bucket list, to be able to step in the ring with my son and be next to him when he’s feeling what I’m feeling for the last thirty years.”
